A lot of students and workers are still going to Canada amidst the diplomatic tensions and job crisis in Canada. Yet, we are updating the list of things which a person has to carry while they are going to Canada, especially for living in Canada for at least an year – Packing list for Canada 2024.

Our list will be comprehensive as much as it is needed, hence bear with patience to read it all. Since we are combining all the aspects of every type of people going, choose wisely which all applies to you and which don’t. This list comprises of items which we are tabulating as per the information we received from various consultancies, agencies and from the experience of various individual expats in Canada.

We also have added specific details regarding the items which are not allowed to take with you while going in a flight as well as certain items that are strictly banned/regulated by Canadian customs.

Is this list specific for Indians?

This list is made by and from various expats of Kerala state of India and hence it will directly benefit South Indians. For students and workers from other parts of India, the items would only change by 10% as there will be a significant change in the food and crockery items.

For people outside India, almost the 75% of the list is still same, only change will be of certain items that are specific with Indian cultured people. Even though this article targets Indians, almost every South Asian and Middle East / North Africa people will find it very similar and useful.

So, let’s get onto the most comprehensive and elaborate Packing list for Canada 2024 for students and workers as well.

The following will be the items to carry while immigrating to Canada from India. We will mark the essential items as Essential and non-essential but still useful items as Optional and strictly banned items as Banned. We are creating and tabulating various items in categories:

1. Clothing and Dresses Packing List for Canada

T-Shirts: t-shirts are the most common and easy to wear dress that every one should carry. Irrespective of climate, situation or person it’s the most useful kind of dress. Essential
Shirts: Shirts are another common wear which is useful irrespective of the gender and situation. But take them wisely as a variety of professions need different varieties of shirts. It’s different for a general labour worker compared to an administrative or office worker; It’s different for a student compared to one who is also going for work. So use your brain and buy what you need. Essential
Formals: Formals include formal dress wears for Office, Meetings, Interviews, Seminars, Conferences. It varies depending upon the occasion. When you are going to a conference or a meeting you are expected to wear a suit for men and formal shirts with skirt or pants for women. But if you are going for an Interview, you are expected to wear a fullsleeve shirt with pants. If you are going to an official party or a function, you can wear a suite with blazers or blazers only with a full sleeve shirt. So pack accordingly. Don’t forget to keep the appropriate pants or trousers or shorts for them. Essential
Jeans: Jeans is very useful throughout your stay in Canada since there are colder months and ultra-colder months. Most of the people will have a thermal wear or a sweater but usually people don’t buy a thermal bottom-wear instead use a good quality jeans. So make sure to bring at least 2 separate jeans – possibly one shade of blue and one shade of black or grey for matching with any other clothes. Essential
Thermals: Thermals are the dresses which is usually considered as the sweaters in India. This is the normal dresses made of wool or polyester which insulates outside cold or traps the body temperature inside. It’s better to have at least two pairs of full sleeve thermal wears and two pairs of sleeveless to use accordingly. Cold Sweater/Jacket: This is the major dress that you wear outside everything you have already worn to protect the coldest and harsh climate of Canada, especially during the winter. If you are going for any northern provinces or norther part of the southern provinces it is most likely to encounter a temperature from 0 degree Celsius to minus 15 degree Celsius. It is so cold for any Indians unless they have knowledge on spending a lot of time in the Himalayas or adjacent places with harsh coldness. Very Essential

Make sure to Buy a good quality one which can withstand up to minus 30 degree Celsius if you are going to a northern province. It will be enough to buy a minus 20 or minus 15 sweater if you are going to a northern side of a southern province. minus 15 degree insulating sweater is enough for anyone on the southern part of southern states including the capital province of Ontario.

Remember that, a cold sweater to withstand very high cold climate is a very essential item you need to have in Canada. So make sure to include it in you Packing List for Canada. If you find it difficult to get in India, better purchase it from Canada as the best ones will be readily available.

Hot Climate dresses: Remember that, in 2023 certain parts of Canada has been hit with a high temperature of 44 degree Celsius. So don’t just pack woollen thermals only. But also few cotton or cotton polyester mix dresses for the summer months since you cannot come to India and buy again (Unless you have the chance to come back to India or afford the high prices in Canada). Regarding Dresses: If you are unable to buy a good quality sweater or thermals in India, you can buy the best one from the near by stores of the place in Canada where you are going to stay, but beware that it will be a costlier.
Bath towels: Pick high quality cotton towels for bathing as well as recreational activities. Essential
Under-garments: Pack cotton under-garments for regular usage. In case if you are wearing a normal jeans/pants/trousers/shorts make sure to wear a thermal under-garment to prevent cold climate. Essential

Bed and Utilities: Bed Sheets, Pillow Covers, Blankets are a must bring. Do not use those available at the bunkers or motels/lodges if you are staying at a temporary location initially. Since the climate is cold mostly, there is a high chance that the bed sheets and blankets are not washed properly because it’s difficult to get dried and laundry charges are costly; use your own. While buying bed sheets, buy a thick cotton sheet. While buying blankets try to buy two layered blankets. There are several items which you are strictly not allowed to take with you while going from India to Canada via flight. Certain Items are generally banned by every Airport/Customs authorities while certain items are specifically restricted to certain countries.

We will give a small layout to the list of strictly banned items and conditional items you shouldn’t carry. Among the big lists we provided above, there are certain items which also can be avoided if not necessary. Make sure these items are not there in you Packing List for Canada.

Here’s a list of items that are generally banned by every airport/customs:

  • Explosives and Flammables: This includes fireworks, dynamite, ammunition, gun powder, flares, replica grenades, or any other item that could potentially explode or cause a fire.
  • Weapons: Firearms (replica or real), knives exceeding a specific size limit, tasers, pepper spray, or any other item designed to harm or injure someone.
  • Illicit Drugs and Narcotics: This includes marijuana (even in places where it’s legal recreational), cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, and any other illegal substances.
  • Endangered Species Products: Items made from animal parts of endangered species, such as ivory, some furs, or specific types of corals.
    Oil: We use oil for various reasons. There is a chance that certain customs personnel doesn’t allow oils which include cooking oil and other oil type content as it is an inflammable object.
    Coconut: Since coconut is a product which contains a hollow part and has the edible part which is used to make oil, it is considered to be inflammable as well as a deceptive object to hide things in. People from South India tends to bring that since coconut is a part of their daily life.

10. Items Banned by Canada Customs (from India)

In addition to the general restrictions, Canada has specific items that are banned or require special permits for entry when coming from India:

  • Fresh, dried, or processed food items of animal origin: This includes meat products, dairy products (except some cheese varieties), and eggs. Due to the risk of spreading diseases, Canada has strict regulations on these items.

12. About the Jewellery, Cash and other valuables

Bringing Jewellery, Gold, Diamonds, and Other Valuables

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) allows you to bring personal jewellery and valuables into Canada. However, you must declare any items with a total value exceeding CA$10,000.

Declaration Process

  • When you arrive in Canada, use the red declaration channel and declare your valuables to a border services officer.

Carrying Cash

There are a variety of documents that each person is required to carry from the beginning of their travel till their stay in Canada. Some of them are user specific and others are general. These are some of the general documents list as well as certain personal documents list.

General Documents required to Carry

  1. Original Passport
  2. A4 size copy of Original passport (two copies)
  3. Port of Entry (3 Colour copies mandatory – The document that gives you access to enter Canada before you get a temporary or permanent study/work permit)
  4. Letter of Acceptance (Offer letter for students / Job invitation for workers)
  5. GIC Letter (the document that indicates you have successfully made a deposit in a Canadian bank for your expenses in Canada)
  6. Medical document (The one you did during your VISA bio-metric verification)
  7. COVID Vaccination Certificate

Make sure you have the digital copy of each in original form in your cloud (Google drive) and a copy of all of this in your Local device (Laptop, Mobile, Hard disks, Pen-drive etc). Along with this, keep the Scanned versions of You educational Certificates you acquired in India. The below list is a sample one. Make sure the documents in your Packing List for Canada is scanned properly using a scanner and not taken through a mobile phone camera.

  3. Degree certificate
  4. Degree Consolidated marklist
  5. Degree semester-wise mark-sheet (4-10 semesters as applicable)
  6. PG Certificate
  7. PG Consolidated marklist
  8. PG semester-wise mark-sheets (4-6 semesters as applicable)
  9. Certificate, Consolidated certificate and semester wise mark-sheets of any other degree/diploma you have (example: B. Ed, Integrated Courses, PG Diplomas etc)
  10. Certificates of any other courses (including online courses)
  11. Certificates of any National / State level exams (SET, NET, GATE, GRE, IELTS, TOEFL, etc)

Other documents Packing List for Canada

  1. Driving license (if you have one in India)
  2. Driving license extract (An A4 sized document to validate your Driving License, enquire at the nearest RTO office – This helps in acquiring a Canadian driving license easily for gents and ladies)
  3. Police Clearance certificate (helpful for gents to acquire a Job/Canadian driving license sooner)
  4. Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voters ID, Ration Card (All optional)
