PGWP Changes in Canada

Since the government of Canada imposed a restriction on the incoming International Students, the life of Immigrant Students in Canada has not been fair. Due to the scarcity of resources and accommodation, students in Canada are already struggling. Price hike due to inflation, unavailability of commodities due to various crisis’ and lack of job opportunities are playing ping pong with the students – PGWP Changes in Canada.

The distress among students are increasing day by day due to these conditions. They paid a lot of money to come study in Canada hoping for a better lifestyle and settlement. The latest antagonist to this series of issues are the govt’s changes they are bringing onto the PGWP rules.

PGWP Changes in Canada

What is PGWP?

Post-graduate Work Permit is the legal permission for an immigrant student to stay in Canada and search for a full time permanent work soon after they finished their studies. It is also called as stay-back duration in colloquial terms. For one year courses it used to be 1 to 2 years while courses with 2 or more year duration gave up to 3 years stay back.

However, on the efforts to reduce student population for the purpose of increasing resource availability and decreasing job crisis, government is planning to put halts to various aspects of PGWP program. It’s just like cutting the wings first, hands then, legs later.

Who should be worried?

Any one who is coming to Canada for studies post July 2024 (Including July) should be worried about this change. For them, they can look for part-time jobs while they are studying. But they has to enter into any jobs where the employer has the license to sponsor them for the duration of that work just before their tenure of studies ends.

For students who are already in Canada pre-july 2024 studying is the group who is actually worried than most of them. Many of them enrolled and begun their studies since January 2024 to June 2024 hasn’t even found a good part-time job yet to cop up their expenses. Since their course is months away from being completed nobody is sure of what’s going to happen with their PGWP system.

The only information regarding this as of now is: Canada’s IRCC will make changes to the PGWP Program in such a way to increase more labours in the areas where there is a shortage, hence to give PGWPs to those courses and students matching those profiles and leaving all other the courses and students out. It is speculated that various professions which need hand & physical labour, health care, constructions and IT will be included.

Students who are currently enrolled need not have to panic, since this changes are expected to be implemented by January 2025 only. But beware that the date could pre-pone and cause an issue. So be ready to Apply for a full time job where your employer can give you a Work Permit.

Students who fail to acquire a PGWP post January 2025 after their course tenure is expected to return to their country or else would be imprisoned and deported once and forever – which is the usual way it goes.
